Rules

Rules is a realistic fiction book by Cynthia Lord. The main character, Catherine, just wants a normal life without having to deal with her autistic brother, David. All her family does, is revolve around his disability. She makes him rules to avoid his embarrassing behaviors, which don't really help. In the summer, Catherine meets two new friends. One at David's clinic, Jason, who is also disabled, and a surprising sort of friend, and Kristi. The next-door friend she's always been waiting for. After everything has happened, Catherine is forced to ask herself the question- what is normal?

Falling from Fire

Today I read Falling From Fire by Teena Booth. Falling From Fire is categorized as a realistic fiction book, but it could also be categorized as a mystery. Not a murder kind of mystery, but a problem-solving kind of mystery. The main character, Teri, thinks that she is a nobody at her school, and only has one "real" friend. Wesley,  the rumpled, eccentric Wesley. On March 15, Teri's birthday, everything goes downhill. Her mother has a new boyfriend, and she doesn't even realize it's Teri's birthday. She leaves town, leaving the kids on their own. Teri's grandmother comes, wishes her a happy birthday and lights a cake, then goes. Teri goes back to make a wish re-liting the candles, and burning away their home forever. After the fire, Teri realizes what she really wants, and starts putting her life back together.
